What to Do With Unwanted Cables

These days, nearly everyone has a wire jungle behind their televisions, computers and other devices. Somehow, cables just manage to crop up, taking on a life of their own.  Anytime you need to do anything, it can be a nightmare trying to figure out what goes with what.

Too many wires, however, can be more than just inconvenient. They can lower the performance of your devices and, in some cases, can be downright dangerous. Here’s how to manage them.

Avoid Losing Power

You’ve probably experienced accidentally turning off your computer, game system or HDTV while trying to plug in a new connection. If it’s challenging to keep them organized, at the very least, put the power cables underneath the other wires, as this will lower the risk of taking out the wrong ones.

Minimizing a Fire Hazard

Though power cables are usually insulated with rubber, when they start to wear out, some turn into what’s referred to as “hot” metal, which then comes into contact with the other cords and dust behind your equipment. You know a cable is worn out when it appears:

  • Loose
  • Damaged
  • Frayed

Power cables that are old like this have been known to cause electrical shorts and fires. By keeping them underneath the other ones, you’ll be able to recognize better when they start to wear out.

Start fresh by removing all of the cables you’re not using. Visit this website for more information about wiring recycling in Cupertino.
